Alice Bradley

Bradley’s Bakery in Ashton under Lyne, was founded by Alice Bradley who has recently died at the age of 72.

Alice opened her first shop when she was only twenty years old with £600 that she borrowed from her mother. Alice’s husband, Fred, was away serving in the RAF and in those days women were much more likely to stay at home with their children than work, let alone start their own business. So, in what was a very male dominated world, Alice set up shop, single-handedly, in Oldham before later moving to the present location at 225 Kings Road, Hurst Cross in 1981.

In 1995 Alice and Fred handed the bakery over to their son Mark who still runs Bradley’s today with his wife, Gill. Alice continued to work in the shop and bakery on a voluntary basis following her retirement in 2005 and, quite rightly, had great pride in the business she had founded and established and which has won many awards including ‘Retail Business of the Year’.

Alice, a widow, became ill last October and she will be greatly missed by all her customers and her much loved family.
