BAKO North Western – Student Bakery Challenge 2012

Following a successful event last year, the student bakery challenge ‘class of 2012’ was bigger and better than ever! With 135 entries from five local colleges; the judges certainly had their work cut out for them.

As a bakery co-operative, the student bakery challenge, was set up to introduce BAKO North Western to potential members/customers of the future. Colleges from the North West area, whom provide professional bakery courses, were invited to participate; allowing students to both challenge their skills and compete against their peers.
The challenge was based across three categories, each picked because of the high level of skill needed to make them perfect:

  • Category 1: 400gm Dressed White Bloomer (using Diamond Bread Improver)
  • Category 2: 4  x Fruited Scones
  • Category 3:  400gm Madeira Cake

Each category was judged and sponsored by an industry expert , with CSM judging the bloomer, Puratos the fruited scone and BAKO Own Label (Cake Mixes) the Madeira Mix.

Judging took place in our BAKORY facility on the 25th May; John Robertshaw, BAKO’s Technical Consultant who judged the Maderia category commented “It’s fantastic to see young bakers of the future competing to such a high level, they have made my job today very difficult”.

With judging over, participants were informed who had won; Liverpool Community College performed very well taking a clean sweep in the bloomer category and Tameside College took each placement within the fruited scone category.
